Orthodontic Treatment of an Adolescent Patient with Cleft Lip and Palate Using Rapid Maxillary Expansion and Edgewise Technique: A Case Report

Abstract

Introduction: Cleft lip and palate is a congenital malformation that covers the lip, palate, and soft palate in the midfacial region, and this is one of the most critical developmental disorders. The etiology of this defect is based on genetic and environmental. Case Report: A boy 16-year-old patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate; patient presented a Class III skeletal relationship and concave profile because of undeveloped maxillary, crowding, anterior and posterior crossbites, Class III Dental Malocclusion, impacted maxillary right canines, agenesis 14, 28, 32, 42 and multiple diastemata in mandible. The patient was treated with Orthodontic Fixed Appliance Edgewise Technique for leveling and alignment and also a rapid palatal expansion to correct the transverse discrepancy. After nine months of treatment with RPE with the fixed appliance, the anterior and posterior crossbites were corrected, and better occlusion and esthetic were achieved. The open window was planned for treating impaction 13. Conclusion: treating cleft lip and palate patients need a multidiscipline approach. Most of the purpose of the treatment has been achieved, and the patient is satisfied with it.
